A chalazion is a bump that forms on the eyelid due to a blocked oil gland. Chalazia often go away on their own. But if it persists and affects vision or appearance, chalazion surgery may be recommended.

During chalazion surgery, the blocked gland is drained and removed through a small incision. It is typically done under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office.

The oculoplastic surgeon will use a clamp to isolate and hold the chalazion. A small vertical cut is made on the eyelid over the lump.

The contents of the cyst are drained. The entire gland may be removed if necessary. Stitches are used to close the incision.

The procedure takes around 15-30 minutes. Some redness, swelling and bruising can occur after surgery and usually resolves within a week.

Chalazion excision has a high success rate for getting rid of the eyelid lump. It helps improve appearance and relieve symptoms. Vision is restored as the pressure on the eyeball is removed.
