The A-Scan Biometry test is an important part of the cataract surgery planning process here at Neelkanth Eye Hospital. During your initial evaluation, our ophthalmologist will determine if you are a candidate for cataract removal based on the cloudiness and vision impairment from the cataract.

Once scheduled for surgery, you will be sent for A-Scan testing. This non-invasive test uses ultrasound to map out the anatomy of the eye accurately.

The A-Scan will measure:

• Axial Length – The length from the cornea to the retina. This determines the overall size and shape of the eye.
• Anterior Chamber Depth – The length from the cornea to the natural lens. This space will hold the new artificial lens.
• Lens Thickness – The thickness of the cataract lens to be removed.

In addition, the corneal curvature is measured to calculate the necessary lens power. Based on these results, the optimal power and type of intraocular lens implant is selected specifically for your eye parameters.

A proper lens calculation is crucial for the cataract surgery outcome. After the cloudy natural lens is removed, the intraocular lens implant will take over the focusing power of the eye. The A-Scan provides the data needed for a customized lens calculation to achieve the best possible vision after cataract removal.
